Reuters News Apologizes For Censoring Viagra Comment Spam On It’s Blog:

Evidently, Reuters is having an issue with email spam also, because I noticed lower down their page they have this: “e-mail us at blogs-(at)-reuters-(dot)-com (address obscured to avoid spam)”.

I dunno, it seems somewhat out of place for a leading edge news service.

The first one, securance.blogs.com is about anti-spam, this is their page Title: “Anti Spam Software & Internet Filters Blog”, yet it’s full of pill comment spam. LOL

The second one is a half decent, although very short (39 words), comment about wordpress viagra comment spam by Dave Naylor. I don’t know how he draws comments with such short posts, but I’ve seen him do it over and over again.

The third one is nothing but spam. Remember, I was not trying to find spam, I was trying to finds blog posts and articles about viagra search engine spam. I never heard of wikipad before, but I guess it’s like a notepad and this one has a search feature so the spammer searched the wikipad for “spam”. LOL Unfortunately for the spammer, none of the bbcode links are active; they’re all plain text. The wikipad search results look like this:

I was curious how a handful of students could attain the #1 position in Google for “buy viagra”, so I checked studmed’s backlinks. According to Yahoo Explorer these young men and women, although busy studying medicine, have amassed almost 6,000 backlinks, nice work boys and girls, I’m sure your deans would be proud of you.

Realizing that accumulating six-thousand backlinks is not an easy task, I took the time to check a few of those backlinks. The first one I checked is from a blog about real estate investing and I thought, “why would a real estate investment blog be linking to a drug site?”. I surfed over to thereiblog.com and found no link to studmed.com, however, I checked the cached version and found that thereiblog.com had been hiding a link to studmed.com. Hmmm, why hide it?

So, why am I calling this a gunfight? Due an old quote from Tim Mayer, Director of Product Management for Yahoo Search at the time of the statement, at an SEO conference a few years ago:

“If you’re being entirely organic and going after ‘Viagra,’ it’s like taking a sword to a gunfight. You just aren’t going to rank.”

Tim made that statement in front of a large audience of white hat SEO gurus, (and wannabe gurus), and Earl Grey is taking it on. Earl, with only his sword, goes up against some of the best blackhat search engine spammers in the world.

So, how is the notorious Earl ranking to date?

On March 19th, 2007, the Stanford Security Workshop released a An Overview of Search Engine Spam by Zoltán Gyöngyi in pdf format. Zoltan’s report is nicely written including definitions of search engine, (SE), spam, why it is done, who does it, and a categorized break down of spamming techniques; including examples of hiding text with CSS, weaving, and dumping.

If you are new to SE spamming and looking for “how to”, Zoltan’s report is a great place to start. You can download his report and read it over and over at your convenience. He covers the different methods used in order to increase a page’s relevance with keyword repetition, explaining how and where to place the keywords; thanks pal.

He explains methods used to increase PageRank, (Google’s term for the importance of a page). He spends extra time giving nice clear diagrams of link farms to show how they work. I especially enjoyed the diagrams of the basic link farm, the optimal link farm, and link farm alliances; thanks bud.
