People have been speculated that Google wiped out the .edu’s from the “buy viagra” SERPs and some people say that Google has a list of keywords that they used, so that, it was more than just “buy viagra” that was affected. There are many more, but I got tired of copying and pasting and formating the damn things. Now I realize that “buy viagra canada college” is not a power phrase that viagra shoppers are using in their searches, but I am just giving you an idea. So, the .edu’s, (managed by America’s college youth), moved from the shortail “buy viagra” to the longtail “buy viagra canada”, (and many, many other longtails).

It was not Google de-indexing them or penalizing them, they moved on their own volition.

But why?

The .edu’s were the first group of sites, (within anyone’s grasp), that benefited from Google’s trust algorithm and eventually the time came for the ever evolving Google to give trust to sites other than the .edu’s; namely the top social sites, like Reddit and Digg. This opened the door of opportunity to every blackhat marketer in the world and made ranking for “buy viagra” much more difficult for the university crowd.

With the increased competition, many more backlinks were required in order to stay at the top. The college kids were not accustomed to gathering 20,000 or 30,000 backlinks.

Additionally, the “buy viagra” SERPs became 100 times more cut-throat due to the spam reports to the college SysAdmin from experienced blackhat competitors.

The party was over, but the .edu crowd learned quickly that the longtail can earn as much, if not more, than the shorttail.
