A major U.S. AIDS treatment group plans to file a lawsuit that accuses drug giant Pfizer Inc. of illegally promoting recreational use of its blockbuster impotence pill Viagra.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) told Reuters it wants Pfizer to be barred from marketing Viagra as a lifestyle or sexual enhancement drug. AHF claims that Pfizer’s Viagra advertising “has caused an increase in the spread of sexually transmitted diseases including but not limited to HIV/AIDS.”

“Pfizer has created and contributed to the perception of Viagra as a safe, sexy, lifestyle, recreational drug, to be frequently used regardless of the degree, or even existence of” erectile dysfunction, the group said in draft legal documents.

Pfizer, the world’s largest drug maker, said it was committed to appropriate Viagra use and urged men to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis. The drug is sold by prescription.

AHF, in its legal arguments, pointed to several Viagra promotions from recent years, including a 2005 newspaper ad that featured a smiling man asking, “What are you doing on New Year’s Eve?”

Another ad that ran near the 2006 Super Bowl urged men to “Be this Sunday’s MVP” and ask their doctors about Viagra.

Anatoly Vitznudel, 52, TEL AVIV, Israel, confessed to charges that he kidnapped his 43-year-old neighbor at knifepoint and drove her to a forest near Tel Aviv in an attempt to extort money from her, but he denied charges of raping her.

Vitznudel claimed that the woman consented to having oral sex and that she actually provided him with Viagra for the sex session. Vitznudel went on to claim that he lost control after taking the woman’s Viagra.

Although some states have a “no fault” divorce law, in New York, US, the state law requires those seeking a divorce to prove some sort of reasonable grounds in order for a judge to grant it. One such “reasonable grounds” is sexual abandonment or refusing to have sex.

Recently a Westchester, NY, wife filed to divorce her husband for exactly that reason. She claimed her husband had refused sex with her and ignored her sexual flirtations for over one year, (an appropriate period of time regarding the state’s laws).

Viagra dosage, supports defendant’s claim that the parties had continued to engage in sexual relations,” Giacomo concluded. “That statement, made six months prior to this litigation, does not appear to have been motivated by a desire to defeat an abandonment cause of action, and is itself bolstered by … plaintiff’s concession that defendant would have no purpose for taking the pills except to have sexual relations with her.”

Based on mostly on that statement, the judge dismissed the case as being without grounds.

A Pakistani woman living in London who supplied tens of thousands of fake Viagra pills has been jailed for two-and-a-half years. Shazia Amjad is expected to be deported to Pakistan on her release.

Shazia Amjad, 39, boxed and packaged the drugs in the garden shed of her home in Uxbridge, west London. When police raided it last November they found fake Viagra and other counterfeit medicines worth more than £250,000. Three types of erectile dysfunction tablet, slimming pills, pain killers and anabolic steroids were found by City of London officers when they raided Amjad’s shed.
