The first time I saw “Horny Goat Weed” listed as an alternative to Pfizer’s Viagra, I thought I was on a joke page. The real name of the plant is Epimedium sagittatum. I have been trying to trace the origin of it’s common name with little luck. I did find one reference at www.raysahelian.com:

“Legend has it that the name horny goat weed came from a herder who noticed his goats becoming more sexually active after eating the plant.”

My personal thought on the effectiveness of Horny Goat Weed is that it’s probably as effective as taking Vitamin B Complex for stress. All the books say Vitamin B Complex works to reduce stress, but I never noticed any help from it.

However, there is at least one person that believes Horny Goat Weed is worth traveling to China to research, here is a quote from health.discovery.com:

No one claims to know how or why Horny Goat Weed has an aphrodisiac affect on goats and humans. It’s just one of those mysteries of the universe.
